Earthenware is a classic material that transcends itself to modern society. Basic glazed earthenware or what we call terracotta is porous in nature. It promotes aeration, and absorbs liquid, and moisture. Compared to other ceramics, earthenware has the lowest mechanical strength. They are easily chipped, and scratched. This is the reason why we believe that painted clay won't last a lifetime. It's fragile, and will have molds due to moisture in the long run.
However, glazing can make earthenware impervious. It protects, and make any earthenware more beautiful. Proper glazing even imitates porcelain giving earthenware that smooth finish.
Earthenware are often handmade giving reason for some imperfection in the process (process is molding, firing. and glazing).
